I revisit this song every few years because of one single experience. Before I share that story, I feel the need to explain that my religion is paganism. However, this song is heavily tied to a very important memory to me. My senior year in high school, I made friends with a young lady who was in the same theatre class as me. She was well known for how weak her voice was, to the point where she required using a tech device to speak on her behalf. We ended up getting along real well and I would stay over at her place a few times. She's extremely into Pokemon and anime and her parents were so happy she had a friend who cared about her well being. They were always concerned about her being in public alone as her voice was so weak she couldn't call for help should she have needed to. I also had the added benefit of the safety of a vehicle in my care so i could give her friendship experiences that weren't tied down to our little border town. One weekend I asked if I could stay with her and they informed me they went to church on Sundays, the morning I'd be waking up there. They warned me due to me having a different religion than they had and they were trying to be courteous of the fact that I'm uncomfortable in heavily religious settings, and my response was to pack an appropriate outfit for the event. No, I didn't impose upon them, they still welcomed me enthusiastically if I was interested in joining them. Only time I wore a white skirt, I sat with my friend in the crowd when we got there and I could feel her joy radiating off of her having a friend with her. They had a live band and I tried to stay focused throughout the ceremony despite my discomfort because I wanted to be there for my friend because I value her. This song is the only one I remember them playing and it actually hit a cord with me. No I didn't change religions on a whim over a song, but I found the value in the purpose of the song. After the preaching and singing was done, there were quite a few people who approached me assuming I was of their faith (I don't blame them, I tried to fit in so much I concealed my pentagram necklace under my baby blue T-shirt) and they tried to convince me to join up with the band cuz it became known through the crowd that I played guitar. I then expressed that I was only present for my friend and I'm only glad there wasn't negative energy after that was revealed. We didn't stay long but I offered to take her home after she and I hung out for a bit in town. We did a few things round town and I took her home afterwards. I don't know if she remembers this day, but it's cemented in my brain. I truly hope she's doing ok these days, I haven't seen her since I moved states.
